Denzel Washington's 'Flight' Is 12 Years In The Making

Although we're just getting into talks and screenings for this year's Oscar bait movies, it's never too early to start talking about next year's likely contenders, is it? Because Robert Zemeckis and Denzel Washington's "Flight" is sounding more and more like it will be one to watch out for next year. When MTV News caught up with screenwriter John Gatins recently, he revealed that production begins next week and that it has taken him more than a decade to get the project off the ground. "Oh man, we start filming next week. This movie for me has been 12 years getting to the screen. It took me forever and it really took Robert Zemeckis coming on, getting Denzel to do the movie, its like a fever dream for me because Ive waited so long," he told us at the premiere of his latest movie, "Real Steel." So what's the story all about? "Its a movie about an alcoholic commercial airline pilot," he said, adding that the tone is adult and a bit old school. "Its an R-rated drama, its like a movie from the '70s that the studios dont really make anymore, so its an amazing vote of confidence on Paramounts part to make the movie." So for those thinking this would be a Hollywood version of hero pilot Sully Sullenberger's story, think again. Other points of interest are the fact that the film marks Zemeckis' return to live action, and boasts a cast of other A-listers in addition to Washington: John Goodman, Don Cheadle and Melissa Leo.
